To Love is To Live: The Unity of God and Man in Art
This one is really, really special to me. This painting is the one that I was probably most excited to bring to life out of the whole series. I was excited about the challenge of working on it with all of its small, complex pieces. It's very different in its shape in that all of the paintings up to this point, you can see the influence of circles and how they are a very predominant shape. But To Love Is To Live shatters that and it’s this kaleidoscope looking eye with the Star of David in the middle. The name David in Hebrew means Beloved. And to me, this painting is a representation of what it means to look at life through the eyes of the Beloved.
This painting is also based off of the number 16. Sixteen is a special number, it is the number 1, which is the number of God, and 6, which is the number of man. They're joined together in unity, two individual numbers making a whole number, with 2 being a number that also represents unity. So you have a lot of meanings there. But the number 16 represents the unity of God and man together. And to me, this painting with this eye shape is to look at life through the lens of love, which is to look at life through the lens of God, because God is love.
To Love Is To Live is a reminder that love is supposed to be a lifestyle. It's not a feeling, it's not an emotion. It's a lifestyle, it's a choice. And when you choose to live in love, you choose to live in God. That unity of God and man is what allows us to love. Loving is the act of us being God, and I think that that is a great way to live life.
